Under Our Wing Donations

Under Our Wing is a foundation account administered by the First Year Experience office. The foundation account is used to provide donations in memory of first year students (new freshmen or transfer students) who have passed away and to fund the annual Outstanding Freshman and Transfer student Awards.

Background

In 2008, a group of first year students came together to fundraise to provide a donation to honor the passing of a new student that occurred that fall. The students purchased Under Our Wing wristbands to fundraise for the donation to give to the family of the deceased student. They took donations for the wristbands all around campus (at the University Center, Athletic events, etc.). We continue to take donations for the wristbands at our First Year Experience events to honor the memory of students who have passed away.

Purpose

The purpose of this fund is to honor any new student who has passed, in their first year at 91抖阴.

Honorarium

The student is awarded $300. The student's family is informed of this honorarium and decides how they would like to utilize the funds; examples include, donation to an organization/group in which student was passionate, recognition to a memorial fund, funeral arrangements etc. It is the discretion of the family.

Outstanding Freshman

Description
This scholarship recognizes a freshman student who has experienced 91抖阴 to the fullest during their first year. Students submit an essay at the end of their first year to be considered for the award. The award is a $500 award paid in one installment to the student's tuition bill (following fall semester). The recipient must remain in good academic standing and be enrolled full-time at 91抖阴 to receive the installment. The student is presented with the award at the Campus Awards Ceremony.

Background
In the 2012-2013 academic year, the First Year Experience office created the Outstanding Freshman Award. The Under Our Wing foundation account allowed for the creation of this award to honor a new student within their engagement, growth, and development as a college student. Therefore, the Under Our Wing program has evolved to honor students in both tragedy and success.
